Report by Haijia Li

The Detroit Chinese Business Association (DCBA) hosted the USA - China Business Forum at Marriott Detroit Troy on Monday September 21 to celebrate its Crystal Anniversary. DCBA has been serving as a bridge for Chinese/American culture and business for 20 years. The city of Troy issued a Proclamation to congratulate DCBA 20th anniversary as an organization fostering relationships between Chinese and American businesses, and recognize the vital role DCBA has played in building mutually beneficial relationships between Chinese and metro Detroit businesses and government officials. Government delegations and many successful and respectful business leaders from various industries have attended the event.

The president of DCBA, Jerry Xu, and the mayor of City of Troy, Mr. Dane Slater gave welcome remarks. Then we had three honorable guests speakers to share their knowledge and experiences in different perspectives on China Business. Our first guest speaker is Mr. Jason Luo, the president and CEO of Key Safety Systems, a global leader in the development of automotive safety-critical components. He is also the chairman of the DCBA Advisory Board. He shared his unique visions and insights on doing business in both China and the United States.

Our second guest speaker is Mr. Thilo Hanemann, the research director of Rhodium Group. His recent work focuses on the rise of emerging economies like China and evolution of China’s outbound investment. His work also regularly supports policymakers formulating adequate policy responses. During the speech, he mentioned about the Chinese foreign direct investment boom in the U.S. and his data-driven analysis on how much Chinese investment is going to Michigan.

Mr. Tony Vernaci is our third guest speaker. He is the vice president of global business development at Michigan Economic Development Corporation and helps attract substantial business, tourists and cultural events from China.

Following after is the panel discussion. We invited Mr. Jason Luo, the president and CEO of Key Safety Systems, Mr. Laurent Bresson, the president of Nexteer Automotive, Mr. Jason Forcier, the CEO of A123 Systems, and Mr. Thilo Hanemann, the research director of Rhodium Group as our panelists. Mr. Brian Connors, the Chinese business development manager at MEDC along with the Editor of DBusiness Magazine Mr. R.J. King are our panel moderators.

After the panel discussion, Mr. David Mullet, the senior partner at EY talked about the EY Entrepreneur of the Year programme, which is to honor and recognize the men and women who create the products, services and jobs that help our economy and communities grow. Two of our speakers at the event are in the list and Mr. Jason Luo is the winner this year.

At the end is the wine reception for networking. Everyone enjoyed the event and celebrated DCBA Crystal Anniversary together. Happy Birthday to DCBA!
