As of 12:00 p.m. Wednesday, June 4, 2008 (Beijing time), the massive 8.0-magnitude earthquake centered in Wenchuan, Sichuan, China had caused 69,122 deaths and 373,606 injured nationwide. The death toll and missing are still adding every minute as rescue workers dug through flattened schools and homes in a desperate effort to save more survivors of China's worst earthquake in three decades. A total of 15.61 million houses in quake areas were damaged, with 3.13 million collapsed. The water conservancy facilities in southwest China's Sichuan Province were seriously damaged. The quake also destroyed 7,635 kilometers of irritation canals, affecting crops on nearly 224,000 hectares of farmland. The damaged power transmission lines in the rural areas added up to 1,978 km, affecting 75 million people. Those who survived the crippling earthquake are now in urgent need of tent, food, medicine and satellite communication equipment. They also need medical workers to save the injured people. The images of disaster and desperation coming from China are shocking. The courageous rescue people and their great efforts moved millions of people in the world. (There is a flash movie with photos below from www.why66.com, please watch it.)
On May 12, a few hours after the earthquake, the Chinese Community organizations in Greater Detroit formed the “Michigan Chinese Sichuan Earthquake Relief Working Committee” and called for donations to "Sichuan Earthquake Relief Fund". A seven-member core team, including DCBA president Mingan Tan, was formed to coordinate the efforts and to ensure all fund go to the needed parties in China, in the most efficient way and in a timely manner. The Committee decided the donation goes directly to China Red Cross. On behalf of the working Committee, on behalf of DCBA, we call for your help, we call for your donations to the survivors who have lost their homes and loved ones! The need is great! The need is urgent! Thank you in advance for your generous support and prayers for China quake survivors! If you’d like to make a donation, there are some donation collection channels in the local Chinese Community:
All donations are tax deductible with receipts from MCF upon request. |
