A Profile of Hangzhou
Hangzhou is located along the Southeast coast of China. It is the capital of Zhejiang Province, the center of politics, economy, science, education, and culture of the province. Hangzhou is a key national tourism city, historical city and vice provincial level city as confirmed by the State Council. Hangzhou is renowned as "Paradise on Earth", "Cultural State", "Home of Silk", "Tea Capital", "Town of Fish and Rice". The total area of the city covers 16,596 Km2 with a population of 6,723,500 (December, 2007).
Hangzhou is a 2,228-year-old city, with a civilization history of over 8,000 years. The Kuahuqiao Culture (8,000 years ago) and the Liangzhu Culture (5,000 years ago) in Hangzhou are hailed as the "Dawn of the Oriental Civilization". The Wuyue Kingdom and the Southern Song Dynasty have both made Hangzhou their capital, and today's Hangzhou is proudly on the list of cradles of Chinese ancient civilization and China's Seven Ancient Capital Cities.
Hangzhou has earned a reputation as "Paradise on Earth" since ancient times. Late Chinese leader Mr. Dent Xiaoping once remarked, "It's not easy to find a tourist city like Hangzhou in the world. Hangzhou should spare no effort in developing tourism industry." In today's Hangzhou, the landscapes are getting more beautiful, and the scenes more charming. Upon the completion of the six-year-long comprehensive protection and renovation project, the West Lake has all the pleasant surprises of a newly polished pearl. The Xi'xi National Westland Park is the first of its kind in China. The Thousand-Islet Lake, with stretches of 573 square kilometers of waters and islands, is enjoying the reputation as "the First Water Wonderland". In the year 2007, 2.07 million international tourists and 41.1 million domestic tourists visited Hangzhou, respectively climbing 14.6% and 11.7% from the previous year.
Ever since China embarked on its campaign of reform and opening-up, Hangzhou has witnessed rapid economic growth. Its GDP totaled 410 billion RMB yuan in 2007, ranking the 8th among all Chinese cities. Hangzhou has indorsed and adopted for ahead of most other Chinese cities in market economy practices, and has created favorable conditions for the rise of a large, strong competitive and expansive private sector. Among the Top-500 Chinese private-run enterprises of 2007, 65 are from Hangzhou. The number ranks the first among all Chinese Cities.
Hangzhou's economy is also highly international. The city has trade and economic cooperation relation with more than 200 countries and regions in the world. The city's international trade volume climbed to USD 4.5 billion in 2007. Up the first half of 2008, the total number of foreign-invested enterprises in Hangzhou has reached 9233, with a total investment of USD 57.32. Foreign investors in Hangzhou come from 103 countries and regions in the world and 58 World Top-500 enterprises have established 95 projects in the city.
